DEVON MERIT ONE
Newton Abbot Spartans 74 – Devonport Services Pilgrims 12
The Spartans took another big step towards winning Devon Merit One for the first time with a dominant display over Devonport Services.
It was a day to remember for winger Max Snowdon
who touched down six of his team’s twelve tries. Hooker Will Luscombe and No 8 Max Wright
each scored twice with singles being credited to centre Alfie Lang
and full-back Josh Davey
. Fly-half Jack Sweeney
was on target with seven conversions.
The Navy side were outgunned in most departments and were handicapped when their full-back sustained a broken ankle mid-way through the first half. Losing a prop through injury at half-time didn’t help either, but Newton front-rower Mike Way
helped out by swapping teams for the second half during which Services scored a couple of tries.
This win put the Spartans (72 points) back on top of Merit One ahead of Barnstaple (69) and Cullompton (65), each of which have played one more game.
Saturday, the Spartans are at Teignmouth before going to Paignton for an evening fixture next Tuesday.
